The greater Chicago metropolitan market continues to expand with the addition of Broker Ken Matkovich as Team Leader in Lake County, Illinois.
Bordering Lake Michigan on the east and the Illinois/Wisconsin border on the north, Lake County boasts a population of more than 700,000 residents and includes the communities of Highland Park and Lake Forest, part of the affluent North Shore.
Ken began working in real estate in the late 1980s while employed at Safway Services, Inc., a nationally known scaffolding and worker-access company. He opened his own brokerage (KPM Platinum Realty, Inc.) in 2006 in Lindenhurst, Illinois, specializing in sales, purchases and leasing of residential and commercial properties.
“Like many people, I used to think auctions were a last resort, but that’s definitely changing,” says Ken. “The door is definitely swinging, and auctions afford buyers and sellers so much more over a traditional-type sale.”
Ken’s focus on finding better solutions for people’s needs began early in his career at Safway when he watched a parade of people being interviewed in his boss’ office for a territorial sales opening. Ken, who had started at the firm as a draftsman, said to his boss “I see all these people come and go, but I’d like a shot. I know this business.” Ken’s boss handed him keys to one of the company pickup trucks and said “You’ve got 90 days, show me what you can do.” Ken became Field Sales Representative at the firm’s suburban Chicago office, covering a huge territory that stretched all the way west to Iowa. Within only three years, he became one of the company’s top sales people, which in the latter 1990s helped to elevate him to the position of Branch Manager of the West Allis and Madison, WI offices, overseeing operations of approximately $6 million in annual gross revenue and growing the business in those offices by 30%.
Ken sees real estate auctions as not only a great solution for consumers, but for fellow real estate professionals, too.
“People who are in the industry and struggling, I hope auctions catch fire with them, too, because the traditional model is changing forever. If I had to sell my own home, an auction is definitely the way I’d do it.”
