Since the 1950s, products have been sold on TV. You name it, it has probably been sold on TV. So why not sell real estate on TV, online or even YouTube? There are now reality TV shows that showcase auctions, such as Storage Wars, Property Wars, Auction Kings and Auction Hunters. Auctions have hit the mainstream of America. Watching these shows really drives home the point that auctions are still in the fabric of selling all types of real estate throughout the world. The interesting thing to me is that auctions have been around for centuries and with companies like eBay it has created even more awareness.
From the moment I told my clients, friends, family and peers that I was aligning my real estate career with RealEstateAuctions.com, I was asked; “Is that like the TV show Property Wars?” I responded that it is similar, in that the auction process is the same no matter the product being sold. The Property Wars show is certainly animated for ratings; however, all the range of emotions that you see in the show can also occur at an auction event. It can be an emotional roller coaster.
The sense of competition, the rush you feel raising your hand or paddle is exhilarating to make your bid with the intent of ultimately winning, getting that great deal and owning that property. The bidding process is strategic and only you know your strategy and how high you are willing to go.
Imagine yourself at a real estate auction. As the bidding starts you hear the chant of the auctioneer and the excitement rises within the room. The bidding continues and one person finally drops out, then another round of bids, then a few more drop out and it’s down to perhaps just three people: you and two others. You are first to continue the next round of bids, you call out you bid; your bid is countered by one of the other bidders, another person drops out. At this point you decide you are all-in; you shout out your bid. The other bidder pauses, the auctioneer starts, “Going once; going twice…”
